What is an MPPT?

MPPT stands for maximum power point tracking. It is a control method used to help compatible solar systems draw useful power as conditions change.

Why a solar panel needs control

A solar panel’s voltage and current change with sunlight, temperature, shading and the electrical load connected to it. There is a point where the panel can provide its most useful available power for those conditions. That point moves as conditions change.

What an MPPT controller does

An MPPT controller monitors the panel side and adjusts how the system operates so it can track that changing point within the equipment’s design limits. It then manages the power sent to the battery or connected DC system.

What MPPT does not mean

MPPT does not make sunlight constant or remove the effect of shade, weather or panel orientation. It does not allow a panel or controller to operate beyond its published voltage, current or power limits.

What to check in a setup

Check the panel’s open-circuit voltage and rated current against the controller’s solar-input limits. Confirm the battery type and charging settings are supported. Use suitable cables, connectors and protection, and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
