What is an appliance load?

An appliance load is the electrical demand an appliance places on a power system. It includes running power, energy used over time and, where applicable, short starting demand.

Power and energy are different parts of the load

Running power is measured in watts. It tells you the demand at a particular moment. Energy use is measured in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours and depends on both power and operating time. A high-power tool used briefly may consume less energy than a lower-power appliance left on for most of a shift.

Some loads are steady. Others cycle on and off, change with operating mode or draw more power when a motor or compressor starts. Standby demand can also matter when equipment remains connected. This is why one wattage figure does not always describe the whole job.

How to record an appliance load

Start with the appliance label or manufacturer’s manual. Record the stated input power, voltage and supply type. Do not substitute an output rating for electrical input. If the appliance has several modes, note which mode is used and for how long. Where starting demand is stated, record it separately from running power.

For a real work cycle, note how long the appliance runs and whether other equipment will operate at the same time. A suitable meter can help characterise plug-in equipment, but follow its rating and instructions. Fixed wiring, high-current equipment and unfamiliar connections need a suitably qualified person.

Why it matters when selecting power

A power system needs enough continuous output for the loads running together, enough short-duration capability for applicable starting demand, and enough usable energy for the required operating period. The outlet type, AC or DC supply, voltage and connector also need to match.

Treat estimates as planning inputs, not guaranteed runtime. Confirm the exact appliance data and expected work pattern before selecting equipment.
