What is a dual battery system?
A dual battery system adds an auxiliary battery to a vehicle's starter battery so work or camping loads can use stored energy without relying directly on the battery reserved for starting the engine.
More than two batteries
A working dual battery system includes the batteries plus the equipment that charges, isolates, protects and distributes power. The starter battery remains responsible for starting the vehicle. The auxiliary battery supplies accessories such as a refrigerator, lighting, communications equipment or an inverter while the vehicle is parked.
Charging arrangements vary. They may use an isolator, a voltage-sensitive relay or a DC-DC charger, and some systems can also accept solar input. The right arrangement depends on the vehicle charging system, battery chemistry, cable run, expected loads and manufacturer requirements. Do not assume a layout suited to an older vehicle is suitable for a newer one.
What to size
Start with a load audit. Check the simultaneous running and starting demand, the energy needed between charging opportunities, and the current the battery and distribution equipment must carry. Then confirm the available alternator charging conditions and how long the vehicle is normally driven. Battery capacity alone does not show whether the system will recover between shifts.
Installation and alternatives
Mounting, ventilation, cable protection, fusing, isolation and battery management all matter. Follow the battery, charger and vehicle manufacturers' instructions and use a competent installer for the system and the applicable electrical work.
A dual battery installation is fixed to the vehicle. A portable power system can be moved between vehicles or taken directly to the work area, but it must still be sized for the load and charged from a compatible source. Compare the operating requirement, installation constraints and recharge plan for reliable field operation rather than treating either format as universally better.
