Peak Power vs Continuous Power: What’s the Difference?
Continuous power is what an inverter can sustain. Peak power is a short surge for startup loads. Both ratings matter.
Peak power and continuous power are two different inverter ratings. Confusing them is one of the easiest ways to oversize expectations and undersize the system.
Continuous power is the load an inverter or power station can support steadily. If a unit is rated for 2,000W continuous, that is the level it is designed to supply during normal operation.
Peak power, sometimes called surge power, is a short burst above the continuous rating. It exists because motors and compressors often need extra current for a moment when starting. Fridges, pumps, saws and some workshop tools can all have startup surges above their running load.
The practical rule is simple: size the system around continuous power first, then check peak power for the hardest startup load.
If a tool needs more continuous power than the inverter can provide, it will trip or shut down. If the startup surge is too high, the tool may never start cleanly in the first place.
